Dictionary and User in Interaction: Upgrading the Central Language Portals for Slovenian

The project Dictionary and User in Interaction: Upgrading the Central Language Portals for Slovenian (SUPr) is dedicated to the maintenance, upgrading, and further development of the central digital language resources for Slovenian: the Fran portal, the educational portal Franček, the multilingual dictionary portal Franja, and the Language Consulting Service. Its main aim is to ensure that these publicly accessible resources remain professionally reliable, up to date in content, technologically robust, and easy for users to understand.

In the two-year period 2026–2027, the project will provide regular annual increments of the growing dictionaries and normative resources on the Fran portal, including the Dictionary of the Slovenian Standard Language, 3rd Edition (eSSKJ), the Growing Dictionary of the Slovenian Language (SSSJ), and ePravopis – Slovenian Normative Guide together with its Orthographical Categories of the Slovenian Normative Guide. In addition, selected parts of eSSKJ will be enhanced in terms of data presentation, selected historical dictionaries will be upgrated, the School Greek–Slovene Dictionary will be added to the Franja portal, and a new annual increment of the School Dictionary of the Slovenian Language will be prepared for the Franček portal. The project also includes the continued operation of the Language Consulting Service, the technical improvements to the language game Besedoboj and the addition of new games, the preparation of short educational and informational videos, and the introduction of a communication widget on the Franja portal to inform users and enable two-way interaction.

By updating the language portals, the project improves access to reliable language information, encourages the independent use of language resources, and contributes to the development of language proficiency. Special attention is also given to user experience because, alongside content updates, the project includes improvements in data presentation, interactivity, and communication with users. Because the project builds on already established databases, workflows, and technical solutions, its results will not be one-off outputs, but will instead be incorporated into the further development cycles of the portals. In this way, the project will strengthen Fran, Franček, and Franja in the long term as key reference environments for Slovenian in the digital space.
