Research interests

Prof. Metka Furlan’s main research focuses on the Slovene, Slavic and Hittite areas of Indo-European comparative linguistics and etymology; her research interests also include onomastics and theoretical aspects of etymology.

Between 1983 and 2005 she participated in the preparation of two volumes of Bezlaj’s Etymological Dictionary of Slovene (Etimološki slovar slovenskega jezika, 1995, 2005). In preparation of conceptual premises for the New Etymological Dictionary of Slovene Language (“Novi etimološki slovar slovenskega jezika”) she has been continuing research on the etymological analysis of (mostly) Slovene appellative words.

Since 1994 she has been teaching the courses“Hittite” and since 2000 “Laryngeal theory” in the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. She is a member of editorial board for the journal Jezikoslovni zapiski; of the Slovene Government Commission for the Standardisation of Geographical Names; the German Oriental Society (Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft); the Etymological Commission of the International Committee of Slavists.
