Research interests

Assistant Prof. Danila Zuljan Kumar has been focusing her research on Slovene dialectology, especially on The Ter/Torre Valley, Nadiža/Natisone and Brda dialects of the Littoral Slovene dialect group. Within this, she is particularly interested in the linguistic contacts between unrelated languages, i.e. between western Slovene dialects and their Roman neighbours. Recently, she has been also focusing her research on the sociolinguistic topics, such as the relationship between identiy/-ies and language/-ies in multilingual societies.

She participates in the preparation of the Slovene Linguistic Atlas.

She participates in the courses Slovene dialectology and Sociolinguistics in the Faculty of Humanities, University of Nova Gorica. In the academic year 2017/18 she participated in the course Friulian language, literature and culture together with Dr. Giorgio Cadorini from the University of Opava in the Czech Republic.

She is a member of the Slavic Society of Slovenia (SDS), the International Society of Dialectologists and Geolinguists (SIDG) and the Slavic Linguistic Society (SLS). Since 2018 she has been working in the Slovenian-Italian group for the enrolment of Brda/Collio/Cuei to the UNESCO cultural heritage list.

She collaborates with the Slovenian (Inštitut za slovensko kulturo – Institute for Slovene Culture in San Pietro al Natisone/ Špeter, Kulturno društvo Ivan Trinko – Cultural Association Ivan Trinko in Cividale/Čedad and Slovenski raziskovalni inštitut (SLORI) – Slovenian Research Institute in Trieste/Trst) and Friulian institutions in Italy (Agjenzie regjonâl pe lenghe furlane (ARLeF) – Regional agency for the Friulian language, Udine and Società filologica friulana – the Friulian Philological Society).

She participates in the preparation of Gradnik’s Evenings in Brda and Škrabec Days in Nova Gorica. She was the co-editor of the two collections of stories from the Ter/Torre Valleys of Slavia Veneta, Italy.

Curriculum Vitae

Born: 1968 in Šempeter near Gorizia.

In 1994 she graduated (BA Hons.) from the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, in Slovene and English languages and literatures. In 2001 she completed Masters Studies with the thesis Narečne interference v skladnji beneškoslovenskih besedil [Dialectal interferences in the syntax of the texts from Slavia Veneta] and in 2006 her PhD, with the thesis Govorjena briška narečna besedila z vidika besedilne skladnje [Spoken dialectal texts from the Brda region in the light of textual syntax], both from the same department as BA Hons.

From 1992 to2002 she taught English in primary and secondary schools and from 1995 to 1998 she taught Slovene in the Wall Street Institute in Gorizia, Italy.

Since 2002 she is employed in the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language, ZRC SAZU.

Since 2010 she is the Head of Research Station ZRC SAZU Nova Gorica.

She lectured through the Erasmus program at the universities in Prague, Lodz, Vilnius, Sofia, Krakow and Buenos Aires.

Since 2008 she participates in different courses at the School of Humanities, University of Nova Gorica, where a number of descriptions of the Littoral local dialects and thematic dialect dictionaries were written under her mentorship.
