Research interests

Dr. Silvo Torkar’s research focuses on Slovene and Slavic diachronic onomastics and local history of the Baška valley in the Tolminsko region.

From 2000 to 2002 he participated in the international project the Encyclopedia of Slavic Onomastics (Warsaw-Krakow). From 2003 he has been a member of the Onomastic Commission of the International Slavic Committee. As a co-editor, he participated in the thematic issue of the journal Chronicle, dedicated to Tolminsko (1994); monograph on onomastics by P. Merku, Krajevno imenoslovje na slovenskem zahodu (2006); Baški zbornik (2006); and Merkujev Zbornik (2007).

Curriculum Vitae

Born: 1 October 1954 in Jesenice.

1978: graduated (BA Hons.) from the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, in Russian language and literature, and sociology.

1976: participated in a one month course of Polish in the University of Warsaw.

1984/1985 awarded a scholarship by ZAMTES to study Georgian language, literature and culture in the Tbilisi State University.

Since 1990: employed (tenure) in the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language, ZRC SAZU.

1990: participated in a one and a half month course on Georgian language, literature and culture in Tbilisi State University.

1997: spent one month of research/study, under the CEEPUS program, in the Institute of Polish Language in Krakow.

2001–2003: acted as a scientific secretary for the 13th International Slavic Congress in Ljubljana.

2004: completed Masters Studies in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, with the thesis Zgodovinska antroponimija vzhodne Tolminske.

2011: completed PhD in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, with the thesis Tvorba slovenskih zemljepisnih imen iz slovanskih antroponimov: identifikacija, rekonstrukcija in standardizacija.
