Assistant Prof. Matej Šekli’s research fields are comparative Slavic linguistics, Slovene historical grammar and dialectology, Slovene onomastics, and languages in contact.
Since October 2009 he has been teaching courses in the field of comparative Slavic linguistics in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana.
Since October 2004 he has been a member of the work group of the International Commission for the preparation of the Slavic Linguistic Atlas, which operates under the auspices of the International Slavic Committee.
In the period 2008–2010 he acted as the Head of the international project L6 9052-0618, The Lexicon and the Course of Lexical Isoglosses in Slovene Dialects in Austrian Carinthia (“Leksika in potek izoleks v slovenskih narečjih na avstrijskem Koroškem”).
His professional activity is related to the application of theoretical research insights into practice through his involvement in the planning and implementation of the use of Slovene in the province of Udine (Italy).

Born: 20 October 1976 in Šempeter near Gorica.
2001: graduated (BA Hons.) in comparative Slavic linguistics, and Slovene language and literature from the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana.
2001/2002: studied German-Slovene onomastics and Sorbian studies in the Philological Faculty, University of Leipzig; and Lithuanian in the universities of Münster and Vilnius.
2007: completed PhD Studies in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, with the thesis Ledinska imena v kraju Livek in njegovi okolici.
Since 2003: employed in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana.
Since 2007: employed in the Dialectology Section of the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language, ZRC SAZU.
