The Word of the Year 2024 is genocide

The Sign of the Year 2024 is peace.

At exactly noon today, the Word of the Year 2024 was announced in the ZRC Atrium: genocide. The representative of the Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing of Slovenia, Valerija Škof, also revealed the Sign of the Year: peace.

The second-place word of 2024 is omrežnina (network charge), and in third place, people voted for the term dvoživka ("amphibian") used to describe doctors who work in both the public and private sectors. The Neologism of the Year is preturizem (over-tourism), a term referring to "excessive tourist visits that negatively affect the daily lives of local residents."

The Word of the Year campaign, led by Dr. Simona Klemenčič from the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovene Language at ZRC SAZU, took place for the ninth time this year. More than 6,000 votes were cast on the Word of the Year website.
