Successfully Concluded Symposium Towards a New Slovenian Grammar
On October 8 and 9, 2026, the scientific symposium Towards a New Slovenian Grammar took place in the Atrium of ZRC and the Main Hall (Gosposka dvorana) of ZRC SAZU. The event was organized to mark the 100th anniversary of Jože Toporišič's birth and the 50th anniversary of the publication of his Slovenska slovnica.

More than 70 experts participated in the program, presenting 50 papers divided into a plenary session and 12 thematic panels. The event brought together numerous Slovenian language researchers from various institutions and linguistic backgrounds.
Over the course of two days, we addressed a wide range of topics related to the development of a new Slovenian grammar: from its methodological framework, phonetics/phonology, morphology, and syntax to word formation, text linguistics, language varieties, as well as modern linguistic resources and tools. We also learned from experiences gained during the development of major online grammars for other languages.
The symposium was exceptionally successful. Alongside the comprehensive program, we were particularly pleased by the lively, substantive, and open expert discussions. The gathering demonstrated the vast extent of knowledge about the Slovenian language within Slovenian linguistics and highlighted the importance of collaboration among researchers from diverse theoretical backgrounds in creating the new grammar.
We have taken a major step forward towards a new Slovenian grammar—one that will be rooted in modern research, reflect actual language use, and be created through the joint efforts of a broad linguistic community.

Our sincere thanks go to all speakers, presenters, and participants for their contributions, discussions, and willingness to collaborate!
