Research interests

Associate Prof. Jožica Škofic investigates Slovene dialects, with a special focus on the Upper Carniolan dialect (Gorenjska), dialectal terminology of disappearing professions (blacksmiths, bird catchers) and dialectal onomastics (place and house names, nicknames). Her research focuses on the preparation of the Slovene Linguistic Atlas which encompasses: recording and phonological descriptions of local speech; linguistic analysis, comments and geolinguistic presentation of dialectal lexica. She also participates in research for the European Linguistic Atlas (comments and notes on Slovene materials; linguistic analysis and geolinguistic presentation of vocabulary for selected aspects in ALE). She has supervised several BA theses in the field of dialectology and literary terminology and doctoral theses in the field of dialectology, all in the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana and in the Faculty of Humanities, University of Primorska.

She is a member of the International Society for Dialectology and Geolinguistics (SIDG), the president of the National Commission and a member of the Editorial Board of the European Linguistic Atlas (Atlas Linguarum Europae, ALE), a member of the DialectologyCommission of the International Slavic Committee (MSK), a member of the Slavic Society of Slovenia and a member of the Slovene Society for Editing and Proofreading.

Curriculum Vitae

Born: 4 March 1964 in Ptuj.

1982–1987: studied Slovene language and literature at undergraduate level in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana.

1991: completed Masters Studies in Slovene language and stylistics, in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, with the thesis Problemi slovenskega pogovarjalnega jezika.

1997: completed PhD in Slovene historical grammar and dialectology, in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, with the thesis Glasoslovje, oblikoslovje in besedišče govora Krope na Gorenjskem.

1987–1988: taught Slovene language and literature in the PTT High School Centre (PTT srednješolski center) in Ljubljana.

Since 1988: employed in the Dialectology Section of the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language, ZRC SAZU.

2010: awarded the title Research Advisor by the Section of Philological and Literary Sciences, Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Since 2006/2007: employed (part time) in the Faculty of Humanities, University of Primorska, where she has been participating in the following courses: “Introduction to linguistics”, “Slovene language in society”, “History of Slovene language”, “Dialectology”, “Morphology and phonology of Slovene literary language”.

1988: participated in Czech language course (one month) in Brno, Czech Republic.

2009–2010: spent three months of research/study in the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics, Zagreb, Croatia.
